How the word unscrambler works

Every word in the dictionary is checked against the letters you have. A word counts as a match when you hold enough of each letter to spell it, with blank tiles covering any shortfall. The unscrambler does not care about letter order, which is why it finds words that hide inside your rack even when they use only a few of your tiles.

Results are grouped by length because that is usually how you play: long words score best and use up awkward letters, while two- and three-letter words are useful for squeezing points out of tight spots on the board.

Getting more out of a rack

  • Look for hooks. A short word that takes an S or ED at the end can turn a small play into a two-direction score.
  • Balance your leave. The letters you keep matter. Playing off a Q or a second V can be worth more than a slightly higher score now.
  • Learn the two-letter words. Words like QI, ZA, XU and JO get heavy letters onto the board cheaply.

Example

The six letters RSTLNE make 40 words of two to six letters, but not a single six-letter word. Add one blank (RSTLNE?) and nine seven-letter words appear, including antlers, rentals, sternly and relents. That is why a blank tile is usually worth holding on to.

Questions people ask

Which dictionary does this use?

It uses the ENABLE word list, a public-domain list of about 172,000 English words that many word games are based on. Some games use their own lists, so a word shown here may occasionally be rejected by a specific game.

How do blank tiles work?

Type a question mark (?) for each blank tile. The unscrambler treats it as any letter, and the letters it stands for are shown in lowercase in the results.

Is there a limit on letters?

You can enter up to 15 letters, including up to 3 blanks. Results start at two-letter words and are grouped by length, longest first. Long lists show the first 200 words of each length, with a button to see more.

Are my letters sent anywhere?

The search itself runs on your device: the word list downloads once and your letters are never sent to us to be processed. Your letters are added to the page address (for example ?letters=tiles) so you can bookmark or share a search, which means they appear in the URL that our hosting and analytics provider records for page views.
